Interior Design Trends for 2021

According to Good Housekeeping, LivingEtc., and Interior Design websites, design trends are quickly changing for 2021. Instead of thinking minimal, think MAXIMUM now for interior design. Ditch the grey and neutral-colored tones, and add more color and accessories to the smooth walls and clean countertop looks. Think vibrant colors, multiple textures and vintage countertop accessories.

First, the use of bold colors such as deep reds, midnight blues, sage greens, rusty oranges and accent yellows are trending for lamps, vases, pillows, blankets and décor items. Brighter colored decor items now make stunning statements against toned-down and muted grey or cream-colored walls.

Animal patterned pillows, multi-colored and textured wallpaper, and thick upholstery with old-fashioned florals or paisleys, are all back—making bold statements to bring life to the previous contemporary look of neutral-tones. And fluffy fabrics, such as sheepskin, mohair and wools are popular to create texture for accent pillows and blankets.

For bedrooms, thick stripes and black-and-white patterns are popular for wallpaper, wall paint and headboards to accent plain walls. Along those lines, wall murals, lively patterns and painted life scenes have resurfaced to add a feeling of being in a different land or vintage time period while still inside your home.

For furniture, the eclectic and vintage styles of long ago are now back in style, so home designers can mix and match older wood furniture with contemporary pieces for a unique, eclectic look and feel. Wood furniture is once again back to create a popular cottage look, offering a more comforting, warm and ‘homey’ feeling to houses in 2021.

Wood grains and wall textures have resurfaced to create a lively look for 2021, which is the opposite of the previously smooth walls and sleek countertops from 2020. This means that grooved surfaces on a wall, including tiled walls, textured wallpaper and wood panels are in style for 2021 design. Along with that, exposed beams, textured walls and parquet wood flooring is back to create a comfortable, country-styled look for today’s homes.

Home workspaces are now essential spaces in houses for adults, along with study settings for home-schooled children. Having a formal desk space with ample storage space is now considered the ultimate for many working remotely from home.

Create an Open Kitchen

Opening up the floorplan of your kitchen to the living area is the number one item on the list for best investment kitchen remodels. If your kitchen has a divider wall that can be removed, it is recommended that this be done to create an open floorplan look & feel, since many home buyers want to entertain while preparing food.

An inexpensive and quick way to update your kitchen includes replacing old hardware with new pieces, including new cabinet knobs and door handles in the latest style & color. This simple fix can go a long way when it comes to appearance.

Often times, owners want to relocate the kitchen sink, but remodels of this type require a higher investment level. Consider avoiding this, unless you plan on updating the pipes as well in the process. Otherwise, this modification may cost more in the long run.

Modernize the Bathroom

The bathroom is where many seek private comfort. An updated look is important, so often times, simply updating the light fixtures or replacing an old shower head with a new one, can go a long way. Make subtle changes to brighten up and modernize the bathroom, lighting and cabinetry.

One simple change recommended to make to a small, dark bathroom lighter would be to install a ‘light tube’, instead of creating a new window in the wall, which requires invasive renovation and is much more costly. Light tubes can be bought inexpensively and installed relatively easily.

Don’t Forget Curb Appeal

The front door of a home can attract buyers if it looks welcoming. Apply a fresh coat of paint to the door or replace the door entirely for an updated, more modern look.

Front yard landscaping is also one investment that helps curb appeal. Install plants and greenery that will grow to provide privacy around windows and doors after growing. Don’t forget about proper outdoor lighting around the front door & front walkway.

7. Turn a closet into a small home office by replacing slatted shelves with solid wood shelving. Remove the door and add a small chair.
