Interior Design Trends for 2021

According to Good Housekeeping, LivingEtc., and Interior Design websites, design trends are quickly changing for 2021. Instead of thinking minimal, think MAXIMUM now for interior design. Ditch the grey and neutral-colored tones, and add more color and accessories to the smooth walls and clean countertop looks. Think vibrant colors, multiple textures and vintage countertop accessories.
First, the use of bold colors such as deep reds, midnight blues, sage greens, rusty oranges and accent yellows are trending for lamps, vases, pillows, blankets and décor items. Brighter colored decor items now make stunning statements against toned-down and muted grey or cream-colored walls.
Animal patterned pillows, multi-colored and textured wallpaper, and thick upholstery with old-fashioned florals or paisleys, are all back—making bold statements to bring life to the previous contemporary look of neutral-tones. And fluffy fabrics, such as sheepskin, mohair and wools are popular to create texture for accent pillows and blankets.
For bedrooms, thick stripes and black-and-white patterns are popular for wallpaper, wall paint and headboards to accent plain walls. Along those lines, wall murals, lively patterns and painted life scenes have resurfaced to add a feeling of being in a different land or vintage time period while still inside your home.
For furniture, the eclectic and vintage styles of long ago are now back in style, so home designers can mix and match older wood furniture with contemporary pieces for a unique, eclectic look and feel. Wood furniture is once again back to create a popular cottage look, offering a more comforting, warm and ‘homey’ feeling to houses in 2021.
Wood grains and wall textures have resurfaced to create a lively look for 2021, which is the opposite of the previously smooth walls and sleek countertops from 2020. This means that grooved surfaces on a wall, including tiled walls, textured wallpaper and wood panels are in style for 2021 design. Along with that, exposed beams, textured walls and parquet wood flooring is back to create a comfortable, country-styled look for today’s homes.
Home workspaces are now essential spaces in houses for adults, along with study settings for home-schooled children. Having a formal desk space with ample storage space is now considered the ultimate for many working remotely from home.

However, interior designers have decided that Rattan belongs inside as well, in our living rooms and even bedrooms. It can be used on furniture, tabletop accessories, and even lightings. Whatever you put it on, Rattan looks and feels great. And don’t worry, it won’t mess up your home styles. Rattan goes well with boho, traditional, coastal, and even contemporary. It can easily be painted for more color and shape. If you have been shopping lately, you probably noticed Rattan present in many furniture pieces. If your budget is tight, you can find many vintage Rattan pieces on Etsy and other websites.
Yes, colors are fun. Having a mixture of warm and cold shades can make your home feel fresh and tropical. However, this fall, there is a new trend concerning colors. Monochromatic palettes are so à-la-mode this year. Decorating with a monochromatic color scheme palette means using the same tone throughout most room elements, from the wall paint to the artwork, furniture, and even the floor. A monochromatic color scheme doesn’t mean that your entire living room needs to be one shade of blue or green. In fact, the shades of the same color can vary from a dark shaded floor to lighter furniture and a painting on the wall that combines the two.
Having layered lighting in a room evokes different emotions as the lighting changes and highlights different spaces in the same room. Layering Lighting in a home may not be as easy or complicated as you may think. Using different layers of lighting can evoke comfort and beauty. Focus on three layers: ambient, task, and accent lighting. The first can provide illumination so you won’t stub your toe at night when you go to the kitchen for your 2 AM snack. The second for specific tasks and the third for style. This latter may or may not add extra light. It comes in the form of candles and sparkling chandeliers. Layering lighting in a room simply means stepping beyond the simple general light and thoughtfully creating a generous lightscape.
